Most of us will agree that Lima Beans / Avarekalu is one of the tastiest beans we have ever eaten. The fresh aroma when the bean is split and the fresh green look of it makes us drool over the dishes in which it is added.

Lakshmi,  a street vendor who has her roadside makeshift shop opposite the Balbhavan park, makes a living by selling Avarekalu. She and few other women from her family sit in their respective places near the signal close to the Jayanagar 7th Block bus stop. They sell dry and fresh split Lima bean. These women sell these beans throughout the year.

The fiber content in the Lima beans is said to reduce blood cholesterol levels by decreasing reabsorption of cholesterol binding bile acids in the colon . Fresh, as well as dry lima, are an excellent source of Folate ,B-complex vitamins, especially vitamin-B6 (pyridoxine), thiamin (vitamin B-1), pantothenic acid, riboflavin, and niacin.

This is the only space where you get to buy fresh Avarekalu on Kanakapura Road, apart from the regular markets. These beans are sold at Rs. 130 per litre / kilo.
